2003 Yamaha YZF-R6: model changes and buying notes

The 2003 European YZF-R6 introduced a substantial redesign. Yamaha announced it in September 2002, with European release dates starting that December. A late-2002 registration therefore does not, by itself, tell you which model-year specification a motorcycle has.

What changed for 2003?

Fuel injection replaced the earlier arrangement, and Yamaha described roughly 90 percent of the engine parts as new. The chassis used an all-cast aluminium frame, with revised styling identifying the new generation. These changes make the model year an important starting point when researching components.
