2004 Yamaha YZF-R1: model changes and buying notes

Yamaha announced the redesigned European-market 2004 YZF-R1 in September 2003, ahead of a planned February 2004 release. The announcement is a useful reference for separating the launch date from the model year when reading older advertisements.

What changed for 2004?

The new engine used a 77.0 × 53.6 mm bore and stroke, compared with 74.0 × 58.0 mm for the preceding model. Yamaha paired it with the new Deltabox V frame and an exhaust layout with raised silencers. These were substantial mechanical and chassis changes, rather than a colour update.
